Aye, Aye Captain!

Did you know that our IT Director Mike Feely is a keen sailor?!

I only discovered this late one evening when I caught him trying to haggle for boat wheels. He went on to tell me that he needs big wheels to stop his boat bashing into the rocks whilst entering the water. “So you sail?” I asked. This question triggered an incredible story about his hobby, and the weekend he just had.

Mike’s, been sailing now for about 2 years, and he’s recently just brought his Catamaran (that’s a boat to any novice). Like any hobby, finding the time is hard, but he went on tell me about a charity global sailing race ‘Bart’s Bash’ which he recently participated in.

The inaugural ‘Bart’s Bash’ is a sailing race that is run by sailing clubs all around the world on behalf of the charity, the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation.

This race is a metaphor for how Andrew Simpson lived his life and you can tell how passionate Mike was about this event whist he explained how the event unfolds.

Each sailing club will sail an individual Bart’s Bash race at their location on Sunday 21 September 2014.  The Foundation is a charity set up in Andrew’s memory in 2013 to inspire the next generation of young people in sailing in the UK and around the world.

Andrew Simpson, MBE (17th December 1976 – 9th May 2013), nicknamed “Bart”, was an English sailor. Andrew won a gold medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, as crew for skipper Iain Percy in the star class division representing Great Britain. Sadly, Andrew was killed due to the capsize of his catamaran on 9 May 2013, while training for the America’s Cup in San Francisco Bay.

This race is a metaphor for how Andrew Simpson lived his life and you can tell how passionate Mike was about this event whist he explained how the event unfolds.

So far the charity has raised £254,432.42p (Mike contributing the 42p)

This event bought thousands of sailors together to set a new Guinness World Record, raised money for the charity, and inspired the next generation; but more importantly remembering Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson, Gold & Silver Olympic medallist.

Well done Mike.
